Knysnaβs Famous Oyster Celebration
Knysna, pronounced ‘nies-nah‘ is a scenic seaside town that’s full of charm known for its lagoon and forested surroundings. Right on the iconic Garden Route, you’ll find it about 488km east of Cape Town, and 260km west of Port Elizabeth (now Gqeberha).
This annual gathering has become part of the town’s identity. It started as a small, community-focused event in the early 1980s. It’s now grown into a popular occasion that draws visitors from around South Africa and the world.
When and Where It All Happens
The festival usually takes place during South Africaβs winter months – this year, 2025, it falls between July 4 and 13. Knysna becomes a hive of activity during this period.
Youβll find the main events in and around the town center, with some activities taking place near the waterfront and lagoon.

Activities and Entertainment
There is an enormous selection of things going on at the festival. Choose from a marathon, wine fest, fun run, trail run – even a Miss Pearl Pageant and a paintball tournament.
Here is a quick look at some of my favourite events:
1. Sporting Events During the Oyster Festival
Sports are a major part of the festival, and attract people who like a little friendly competition and outdoor fun. One of the main highlights is the Knysna Cycle Tour, which includes both road and mountain bike routes.
Cyclists pass through forest tracks and scenic coastal roads, with a good mix of challenge and scenery.
Runners can join the Houtkapper Trail Run or one of the Cross Country Races, with options for different skill levels. There are half marathons, shorter runs for newer participants, and even family races for those who want to go at a more casual pace.
Some events will take you into the forest, while others trace the lagoonβs edge, offering up unique views of Knysnaβs surroundings.
Alongside these signature races, you may find other sports on the schedule, such as open-water swims or smaller group challenges. Itβs worth checking the festivalβs official program to see whatβs on offer. Plus there are links here if you’d like to register!
2. Non-Sports or Food-Related events
The festival offers a range of activities that add extra fun to the celebration, even if you’re not feeling particularly athletic. One such event is the comedy show starring comedian Kurt Schoonraad.
Get a quirky mix of humour and local culture for a lighthearted break from the more active parts of the day.
Another highlight is the Miss Pearl Pageant. This event showcases local talent and celebrates the community spirit of Knysna.
And if you’re interested in exploring the local natural sights, guided rock pool tours are available. These tours take you along the rocky shores where you can learn about the marine life that inhabits these natural pools.
Itβs a fun and easygoing way to get to know the local environment and gain some insights into the coastal ecosystem.

3. Live Music and Community Fun
Music is another key part of the Knysna Oyster Festival, with shows that showcase different styles and appeal to a range of audiences.
Local musicians and visiting acts take the stage at various spots in town. You’ll have the chance to enjoy live performances while you explore Knysnaβs streets and waterfront areas. This is a fantastic way to get to know the town!
Community gatherings play an important role in the festivalβs appeal, too. You might find yourself browsing local markets, watching cultural showcases, or joining in on street celebrations that bring neighbours and visitors together.
You’ll realize how fun and welcoming the locals are at these events. They create a shared sense of fun and help highlight the people and traditions that make Knysna such a friendly place to visit.
4. Festival Food and Flavours

The festival is packed with all kinds of events and activities, but at the heart of it are the oysters.
Many of the local restaurants, cafes, and pop-up stalls feature oysters prepared in different ways, ranging from classic raw servings to grilled and spiced versions.
There are also oyster-eating contests, where everyone can test their speed against other seafood lovers. And look out for the shucking contest. These are hilarious to watch, and the skills are impressive, too!
Aside from oysters, youβll find a range of dishes, including fish, prawns, and so many other delectable options. Non-oyster lovers (like me) will love it.
When it comes to drinks, join in at the Fine Wine Festival and Castle Lite Beer Tent. Sample local labels and meet the people behind them.
If you prefer alcohol-free choices, there are also mocktails and other non-alcoholic refreshments. Keep an eye on the official schedule, as cooking demonstrations and workshops sometimes pop up.

Tips for a Good Experience
- Plan Ahead: Check the schedule for race dates, tasting sessions, and other highlights. Popular events can fill up fast.
- Dress in Layers: July is winter in Knysna and can feel crisp, especially in the early morning and evening. A jacket or sweater is always handy.
- Get Around Early: Parking can be tricky. Consider arriving ahead of time or using local transport.
If you’re travelling without a car, take advantage of the Hop-On Hop-Off Bus between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth. Rated 4.8 out of 5, exit and re-board the bus as often as you like, see just what you’d like.
The Knysna Oyster Festival is the perfect stop along the Garden Route. It’s a chance to savour seafood, join in sports, and revel in the spirit of a coastal town that loves to celebrate.
Whether youβre visiting for the first time or returning for another round of good food and company, youβll find plenty of reasons to make this festival a highlight of your calendar.
