I’ve spent weeks travelling across South Africa, exploring cities, towns, and its beautiful national parks. And because of South Africa’s shady reputation for crime in its cities, I’ve always exercised caution.
But I’ve never had a problem.
There are over 300 cities in South Africa, and crime can be an issue in many of them. It isn’t always easy for visitors to know which cities are safe. I was warned against visiting South Africa at all, but I went anyway and had an amazing time.
Below we’ll explore the safest places in South Africa – the ones that you can explore with the most peace of mind. There’s a lot of info here, so be sure to make use of the Table of Contents ⤵️

The Reputation of South African Cities
South African cities, unfortunately, have a reputation for being unsafe. This is due to the high crime levels seen in many areas. If you’ve done any research on the topic, you’ll have noticed that the ‘safest city’ varies depending on the source.
But the reputation remains constant.
Much of the violence and crime seen here is quite localized. The “bad parts of town”, often the poor places in South Africa, may be very bad, but there are safer areas, too.
Factors such as poverty, unemployment, inequality and widespread political corruption are common in South Africa. These elements lead to an increase in crime and violence.
This makes it hard for South African cities to shake their negative reputation.
📚 Fact: South Africa ranked 32nd on the Global Peace Index in 2023, compared to other other African countries. Mauritius ranked number 1.
Another cause for high crime rates here is the large gang presence. Fortunately, this type of crime rarely affects visitors to the country. It tends tobe localized to certain areas, ones that hold no interest to tourists.
South Africa is similar to anywhere else anywhere, in that there are cities that are safer than others. Cities that practice increased patrols, stops and searches when necessary, use roadblocks, and set up vehicle checkpoints. In short, they have increased police visibility.
It will certainly take time for South African cities to shed their reputation. But it’s good knowing that the issue is a work in progress.

Which South African Cities Are Safest
Which area of which city you’ll be in will be a factor in your safety, as will what sort of crime can be found there. When it comes to a city’s crime index, things like bribery and corruption are components, as are assault and robbery.
The latter would concern me as a traveller, but the former – not so much. And so the same cities may appear on the “safest” lists and “most dangerous” ones because they’re concerned with different types of crime.
Let’s start at the top with South Africa’s safest city based on current crime/safety index and additional information:
1. Cape Town
The city of Cape Town, on South Africa’s west coast, is consistently ranked as the safest city in South Africa. How safe is Cape Town?
Well, while the Cape Town crime rate is not lower than many other cities in the country, there are lovely, safe areas to explore.
It’s one of my favourite cities in the country. I especially love the waterfront, the beaches, and the fantastic hikes in Table Mountain Park.
But like cities anywhere, there are safer areas and parts that are better avoided.

‣ Safest Areas in Cape Town
✔️ City Bowl is a great part of Cape Town to stay in and explore. It’s centrally located in, and the best of the city is within easy reach.
Here you’ll find the colourful houses of Bo-Kaap and the Company Gardens. You can walk to the V&A waterfront or any number of restaurants and cafes.
✔️ Clifton is home to the famous Clifton Beach, 4 spectacular different beach vibes, all along the same stretch of sand.
✔️ Right next door is Camp’s Bay, another popular beach community. Aside from the blissful beaches, you’ll find scrumptious food and views at the restaurants. And the stunning backdrop of Lions Head and 12 Apostles.
✔️ V&A Waterfront is full of don’t-miss activities, eateries, sights, and shopping. Take a harbour cruise, linger over a seafood lunch, and check out the Robben Island Museum.
‣ What is the most dangerous neighbourhood in Cape Town?
Cape Town City Centre has the highest crime rate of any neighbourhood in Cape Town. This includes crimes of all kinds, such as theft, assault, and drug-related offences.
If you find yourself in this area, make sure it’s in the daytime, and try to go with a friend or a group. Stay aware of your surroundings, and don’t linger.

South Africa’s Next Top 5 Safest Cities
The cities on this list are the safest ones that are most likely to be on a traveller’s list of destinations. The major cities with the safest areas.
The safe areas, unsurprisingly, tend to be the more affluent ones. Stick to these areas for the most worry-free experiences.
There are smaller cities, a little more off the beaten path, that are even safer than these ones. Check them out in the next section.
2. Bloemfontein
More than just having safe areas to explore, Bloemfontein, Free State, as a whole is a pretty safe city. You’ll be able to concentrate on all there is to see here.
It’s located in central South Africa, about 400 km southwest of Johannesburg. Bloemfontein’s name in the local language of Sesotha is Mangaung, which means “place of cheetahs”.
Often simply called Bloem and also known as “the city of roses”, this is one of South Africa’s 3 capital cities. Specifically, it’s the judicial capital and home to the stately President Brand Street.
President Brand Street is in the Central Business District – a safe area of a safe city.
You should take the opportunity to wander down the tree-lined boulevard and visit one of the many museums that you’ll find there. A favourite is the Old Presidency Museum.
Also an art gallery and theatre, the museum was the residence of 3 state presidents. It showcases the history of their eras and the details of their daily lives.
While you’re in Bloem, I encourage you to visit the spectacular National Botanical Garden, too. Located on the outskirts of town, more than 400 species of plants are grown there.
It’s also home to around 50 species of small mammals, and countless birds and reptiles.
Fun fact: Bloemfontein is the hometown of J.R.R. Tolkien. He is, of course, the author of the Lord of the Rings stories, and the favourite quote, “Not all those who wander are lost”.
3. Nelspruit
Nelspruit, now officially known as Mbombela, is another of South Africa’s safest cities. This small city, with a population of 159,549, is the capital of Mpumalanga province, in the northeastern part of the country.
The city is known for its low crime rate and well-maintained residential areas. Neighbourhoods like West Acres and Steiltes are especially safe and peaceful, ideal for visitors.
Beyond its reputation for safety, Nelspruit is loved for its lush landscapes and its biodiversity. The Lowveld National Botanical Garden is a highlight, with a huge collection of plant species and a special rainforest section.
Its location is one of its draws, as a “gateway” to both Kruger National Park. It sits just 66 km from Kruger’s Malelane Gate.
This proximity allows for easy access to safari adventures and wildlife viewing. It makes Nelspruit a prime location for eco-tourism and adventure.
Nelspruit also thrives economically, largely due to its agricultural sector, particularly fruit production. Its citrus and tropical fruits, like mangos and avocados, are important to the local and national economy.
The city’s cultural landscape is exciting, too, with local markets, festivals, and art galleries. All of these celebrate South African heritage and contemporary life.

4. Port Elizabeth
Although levels of crime in Port Elizabeth South Africa are high, the number of safer areas gives it the number 4 spot on the list.
This pretty seaside city on Algoa Bay actually renamed Gqeberha in 2021. The name is in the Xhosa language – one of the local “click” languages and the native language of Nelson Mandela.
The word gqeberha refers to the Baakins River that flows through the city. The name change was made as a part of the effort to retain the language and the culture associated with it.
Also known as Nelson Mandela Bay, Gqeberha is still widely called Port Elizabeth, or PE. It’s considered one of the safer cities in South Africa, especially in a few certain areas.
✔️ Summerstrand is a nice, safe area south of the city centre. It encompasses some of Gqeberha’s best beaches and is where you’ll find the most vibrant nightlife in town.
It’s close to the Boardwalk Casino Complex, with its shopping, casinos, and restaurants. A veritable one-stop vacation spot.
✔️ Walmer – Upper Walmer to be precise – is another of the safest areas in Port Elizabeth. This area has less of a beach vacation vibe, and you’ll find more affordable accommodation here.
✔️ Lovemore is another area where you can let your guard down a bit. In western PE, you’ll find some amazing views here, as well as the Bayworld Museum Complex.

5. Johannesburg
Johannesburg does have a high crime rate. You might even be surprised to see this city on a list like this one.
However, certain areas of the city such as Rosebank, Sandton and Midrand are safer than others.
🏩 Find the top 5-star hotels in Johannesburg in this article.
✔️ Rosebank is full of sights and activities and has a visible police presence to give you peace of mind. The Rosebank Sunday Market is something you’ve got to check out.
You’ll not only find a variety of interesting items, but you’ll love the festive atmosphere.
✔️ Sandton, in north Johannesburg, is the location of Nelson Mandela Square, the centre of the local action. Take in the shops and eateries, plus learn a little history.

6. Durban
The Durban government is making a concerted effort to decrease the crime rate in their city. But you have to wonder what are the good and bad neighbourhoods of Durban right now.
✔️ Durban North is a good area to explore. Spend some time at the Natal Maritime Museum, or the Beachwood Mangrove Nature Reserve.
✔️ uMhlanga, or “Place of Reeds”, is another of Durban’s good neighbourhoods (it’s actually a town in its own right, but is often considered a suburb of Durban).
Go on out to the uMhlanga Lighthouse and stroll along the promenade, or spend the day at the uMhlanga Lagoon Nature Reserve.
✔️ Hillcrest is home to Durban’s Heritage Market, where you’ll find homemade crafts, food, and an interesting array of clothing and other items. It’s a great way to get a glimpse into local life.
7. Pretoria
This is another city that might not leap to mind when listing safe places in South Africa. But there are safe areas. If you’re visiting, these are the safe suburbs in Pretoria:
✔️ Waterkloof – this is the Afrikaans word for “water ravine”. The area is east of Pretoria’s centre and is one of the city’s safest areas. Enjoy the stunning panoramic views of the cityscape and its luxurious atmosphere. It offers a peaceful escape from the urban hustle.
✔️ Groenkloof – here you’re going to want to visit Fort Klapperkop. It has a museum that has the steam locomotive used to transport the troops in the Second Anglo-Boer War. You can also see other interesting artifacts from that time.
If you’re driving a 4×4 while you’re in the area, I’d also recommend a drive on the Groenkloof 4×4 Route. You can go horseback riding or hiking in Groenkloof, too.

5 Safest Towns in South Africa
If there’s a city or town in South Africa that you dream of visiting, don’t give up on it just because it isn’t on the list above. Check out the smaller places below.
Some of these are my favourite smaller South African cities. Not only are they quite safe, but they’re full of natural beauty and amazing sights
8. Hermanus
This little burg has fewer than 6,000 people, and is best known for its epic epic whale watching. Grotto Beach and sublime birding are also huge draws.
And of course, the high level of safety you can enjoy there. In fact, some feel that it’s the safest place to stay in South Africa.
9. Jefferys Bay
There are a few more than 27,000 people living in Jefferys Bay. People love it for the surfing and the seafood.
You can also have a blast sliding down the dunes or skydiving out of perfectly good planes. It’s the land of endless summer.

10. Mossel Bay
This small city of 100,000 is on South Africa’s Garden Route. It houses as many as 60% more people during the summer tourist season.
While not without the odd break-in or similar crime, Mossel Bay is definitely one of the safer places in South Africa.
11. George
A city with over 150,000 people, George still has a nice, small-town vibe. You may have heard of George as the hometown of professional golfer Ernie Els.
It has a level of crime almost identical to that of Providence, Rhode Island in the US. Providence is considered a safe, secure city. It follows that George can be, as well.
12. Knysna
This pretty city of 76,150 people is another safe spot on the Garden Route. It’s a favourite of retirees and expats, as well as tourists.
Visitors who love outdoor activities especially love Knysna.
