The name, uMhlanga, recently changed to its correct Zulu spelling from Umhlanga, means ‘place of reeds’ in the Zulu language. A place of simple beginnings, there is now a good selection of very comfortable accommodations.

You can find a wide range of places to stay in Umhlanga. Your choices are increased if you are willing to drive the 15-20 km from Durban.

I can’t imagine sleeping, though. I don’t think I’d want to miss a second of my stay in this lux penthouse. I might spend all my nights lounging in the hot tub.
The kitchen has everything you need if you love to cook – or snack in the middle of the night. There’s even a washing machine, so you don’t have to worry about packing a lot of clothes!

This really lovely hotel treats you to lighthouse and beach views, plus an award-winning spa. There are 4 restaurants on-site, with a wide range of cuisine for whatever you might be craving.
The Oyster Box is known for its excellent service and delicious food, as well as its beautiful location. As a lover of lighthouses and spas, I fell in love with this hotel.
With free parking, a valet parking option, and the beach only 107 metres away, there’s nothing missing at the Oyster Box. There are even convenient laundry service options.
The rooms themselves range from garden lofts and ocean-view rooms to luxury sea-view suites and cabanas and family rooms. The accommodating staff can arrange off-site activities for you like horseback riding and different water sports.
There’s even a playground and a kids’ club to keep the littles occupied.

Teremok is an 8 suite boutique guesthouse where you can enjoy a massage, a swim in the outdoor pool, or a gym workout. It’s also just 500 metres from the uMhlanga Promenade for a beautiful evening stroll.
One of the special benefits of a stay at the Teremok Lodge and Spa is the breakfast. You’re treated to homemade baked goods and farm-fresh eggs.
If you’ve never had farm-fresh eggs, I highly recommend this lodge just for them! But they also have an honesty bar with cocktails and soft drinks and 2 free coffee/tea stations for you to enjoy any time.
And when evening rolls around, your lovely hosts will make sure you’re taken care of. Their free shuttle will take you and your fellow guests to uMhlanga’s world-class restaurants.

This private air-conditioned studio apartment has everything you need for an affordable vacation in tony uMhlanga. The clean modern space has a fully equipped kitchenette.
It includes all of your towels and bed linens, as well as a balcony with views out over the Indian Ocean.
The studio is about 1.4 km from the main beach and 1.5 km from Bronze Beach. But if you can’t wait to have a swim, you have access to a turquoise outdoor pool, as well as a garden to lounge in while you dry off.
Cordia Crescent is upstairs in a safe, quiet residential area. Guests have raved about the wonderful host, the peaceful vibe of the apartment, and its proximity to the town’s attractions.

🪁 uMhlanga Activities
A holiday in a beach town may be just that simple. You can have a lie in, relax at the beach, and nap in the sun in the afternoon.
But just in case you’d like to see the town and enjoy a few activities while you’re here, we’ve got a few of the best ones for you:
1. The Beaches – Since chances are very good that you’ll be visiting at least on of the beaches while you’re here, let’s start there.
All of uMhlanga’s beaches are known for their turquoise blue waters and long stretches of sand. Shark nets are strung for your safety, and public swimming areas are monitored by lifeguards.
The main beach, or uMhlanga Beach, is home to the Whalebone Pier. CNN has dubbed it one of the most beautiful piers in the world.
The beach is clean and sandy, with the beautiful promenade for strolling. There is also a great selection of eateries nearby.
2. Gateway Shoppertainment World – This is the largest shopping centre in Africa, and in the southern hemisphere. It’s filled with more than 340 stores an 18-theatre complex, and over 70 eateries.
There’s also a ton of activities inside. On top of the snow park mentioned above, you’ll also find a wave pool and a Tony Hawke Skate Park.
It even has a hotel – the aha Gateway Hotel uMhlanga. With an 8.4/10 rating, it’s certainly an option if you want to immerse yourself in shopping mall Nervana. It’s about 3.5 km from the main beach.
3. uMhlanga Lagoon Nature Reserve – Less than 2 km from main beach, the nature reserve is 26 hectares of pristine outdoor beauty.
Take in the bird life and the flora, walk along the ponds, and take on the uMhlanga Laoon Hiking Trail. This easy 2 km loop should take about 30 minutes to complete.
And, if you wander behind the beach dunes, you’ll come across an unofficial nude beach. If you’re feeling unfettered, feel free to join.
4. uMhlanga Farmers Market – Held Wednesdays from 8:30am to 12pm, the market is a great place to stock up if you’re self-catering.
Just off Prestondale, about 4 km from the main beach, you’ll find all the classic market goodies. Think baked goods, fresh produce, hot meals, and artisinal cheeses.
5. Kite Surfing – contact Ocean2Air Kite Surfing for everything you need to get out on the water in uMhlanga. Even lessons of you need them! The area typically has medium waves and conditions aren’t tide-dependent.
6. Mindgame Escape – A rainy day activity, or perfect if you’ve gotten too much sun. Visit the Mindgame website to make arrangements.
7. Scuba Diving – uMhlanga is a great place to dive, and to get certified if you’re not already. UMhlanga Scuba is a 5-star PADI dive centre. They offer lessons as well as dive trips along the coast. You can read more about diving in the area in this Dive South Africa article.
😎 The Best Time to Visit uMhlanga
> Weather
There’s really no bad time to be in uMhlanga. The climate tends toward the tropical, and the coldest it generally gets is around 7 or 8ºC. This is the driest time, too – June, the middle of winter.
As a Canadian, this sounds like a pretty great winter to me.
But, if you’re looking for perfect weather, aim for March. You can expect balmy temps of around 25ºC during the day, with a comfortable 19ºC at night. Even the water is about 25ºC.
This is the height of the rainy season, but total precipitation tops out at an average of 103mm.
> The uMhlanga Food & Music Festival
The festival takes place every August 9, Women’s Day in South Africa. Festivals are always a fun way to celebrate being in a new place.
During this one, you can bask in gourmet street food, great beer, and spectacular music. Showgrounds are set up at Chris Saunders Park, a bit less than 3km from the main beach.
🚖 Getting around uMhlanga
There are a few easy options when it comes to where you’re going in uMhlanga:
> Taxi – hail on the street or call directly
> Uber Go and Uber X– this works the same here as it does anywhere, with an app to book a ride. Uber Go is the cheapest rideshare in town and comes with a 4-seat economy car. Uber X is the cheapest sedan.
> Bolt – similar to other rideshare services, download the app to book a ride
🛩️ Airports
King Shaka International Airport – 20km northeast of uMhlanga, in La Mercy.
Virginia Airport – A general aviation airport that today serves mainly as a pilot training site. It’s 6.3 km south of uMhlanga.

uMhlanga is an absolutely beautiful spot for a holiday. Whether you just need a weekend away from the every day, or you’re working your way across South Africa and need a little beach time, you’re going to love uMhlanga.
