If you’re travelling to less developed parts of the world, hiking through the wilderness, or putting together an emergency kit at home, you need to have a clean water plan.
Part of that plan might be water purification tablets. Proper use of them is a tried and true way of ensuring that you have safe drinking water.
And to use them properly, you’ll need to know – how long do water purification tablets last? Read on to find all of the info you need to be sure that you’ll have clean water to drink when you need it.
How Long Do Water Purification Tablets Last?
This is a great question, and an important one!
Say you find some tabs in your bag and there is no expiry date on the package that you can go by. A good rule of thumb is, if you can’t remember when you bought them, discard them. It’s not worth the illness you risk by using them.
However, if you do have an idea how long you’ve had them, discard any unopened container of iodine or chlorine/chlorine dioxide/ NaDCC water purification tablets 4 years after purchasing.
Silver tablets with no NaDCC can be kept for 10 years unopened. And discard any tablets that have been stored in an open container for one year or more.
Unless you will be using water purification tablets often, it’s not a good idea to simply buy a big container. Not if you’ll just toss them on a shelf or in your bag, and keep using them until they’re gone.
They don’t have an infinite shelf life.
Shelf life refers to the length of time after manufacture that your water purification tablets will do their job properly. The expiry date is the end of their shelf life.
They have an expiry date that has been determined through scientific research and assigned by the manufacturer. As well, the way they’re packaged and how they’re stored will play a role in how long water purification tablets last before expiry.
Water purification tablets include non-active ingredients, as well as pathogen-killing active ingredients. These non-active ingredients make up most of the size of the tablets, and affects their shelf life.
Therefore you may see two brands of water purification tablets that have the same active ingredient, but have different shelf lives. It’s important to rely on the expiry date on each package.
I’ll talk about water purification tablet expiry, packaging, storage requirements, and more below. Read on.
What Kinds of Water Purification Tablets Are There?
Available water purification tablets fall into these main categories, based on their active ingredient. Some active ingredients are more effective than others:
- Chlorine – will kill bacteria, viruses, NOT parasites.
- Silver – can kill bacteria and some viruses, NOT parasites, and are best used with another purification method, like filtration, or with a chlorine ingredient.
- Iodine – will kill bacteria and viruses, NOT parasites.
* Chlorine dioxide is quite effective at killing Giardia. It is much less effective at killing cryptosporidium.
The bottom line is, that water purification tablets can not be relied on to kill all parasites in water. It’s recommended that they be used in conjunction with a filter if parasites in the water are a concern.

Do All Water Purification Tablets Expire?
The short answer to this question is yes. However, few things are that straightforward.
When the subject is how long water purification tablets last, the odd ball out is iodine. Because iodine is classified differently by the EPA in the US, manufacturers are not required to print an expiration date on the packaging.
However, this doesn’t mean that iodine water purification tablets will last forever. This will be discussed in more detail later on.
Here’s a comparison of how long different water purification tablets last, and other important info:
| Active Ingredient | Popular Brands of Water Purification Tablets | Wait Time AFTER Tablet has Dissolved | Kills* Parasites | Shelf Life (Expiry) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chlorine | • LifeSystems Chlorine Tablets | 30 minutes | No | 5 years |
| Chlorine dioxide | • Katadyn Micropur MP1 (also contains NaDCC) • Potable Aqua Chlorine Dioxide • Lifesystems Chlorine Dioxide | warm water (20ºC) – 30 minutes cold water (5-15ºC) – 40 minutes Use dark, opaque container | Many, not all | 5 years(Katadyn) 4 Years (Aqua) 3 Years (Lifesystems) |
| NaDCC | • Aquatabs Water Purification Tabs • Oasis Water Purification Tablets | 30 minutes (Shake/mix 10 minutes first) | Many, not all | 5 years |
| Silver | • Katadyn Micropur Forte MF 1T (also contains NaDCC) | 30 minutes very cold water – 2 hours 4 hours to kill giardia | No | 5 years |
| **Iodine (Store in dark Bottle) | • Potable Aqua Tablets with PA+ • Coghlans Drinking Water Tabs | warm water (20ºC) – 30 minutes cold water (5-15ºC) – 40 minutes | No | Recommended 4 years |
**DON’T use iodine tablets for more than 3 weeks in a year, as there is a risk of developing thyroid issues &/or iodine sensitivity.
* Water purification tablets should not be relied on to give you drinking water that is free of parasites such as cryptosporidium, giardia, or Schistosoma.
Crypto and giardia are often found in water that has been exposed to human or animal waste. For example, a mountain stream that may have wildlife that defecates in or near the water.
Schistosoma can be found in tropical and subtropical areas, such as Africa, the Caribbean, and parts of Asia.
There are water purification tablets that claim to kill giardia in 4 hours. However, this isn’t always realistic. Four hours is a long time to wait.
The safest course of action will require treatment before the tablets, such as with a filter that is 1 micron or smaller.
Plus, it must have a cyst rating of NSF 53 or 58 certifications. You can also use a UV sterilization pen if the water is clear.
How Long Do Water Purification Tablets Last After They’ve Been Opened?
The above expiries apply to unopened tablets. In order to have water purification tablets that last as long as possible, purchase tablets that are packaged individually whenever possible.
This is usually quite easy, as many tablets are sold this way. If this is the case, check the packaging for the manufacturer’s expiration date.
This will be the most accurate indicator of how long your water purification tablets will last. They may have been sitting in the store for some time.
For this reason, the expiration date on the package is the best way to know how long after you purchase them your tablets will be effective.
The expiry date can usually be found on the outer packaging of your tablets. If the tablets are also wrapped individually inside the main package, you might also find an expiry date printed on each envelope.
However, if your tablets are in a bottle, you should discard them no more than one year after the bottle has been opened.
Therefore unless you will be using them up quickly, you might want to reconsider buying water purification tablets in large tubs or containers.
How to Store Your Water Purification Tablets So They Last Until Their Expiration Date
The stated shelf life of water purification tablets only applies if they’re stored correctly:
- keep tablets away from water and humidity
- refrain from letting tablets sit in direct sun
- don’t expose tablets to extreme temperatures
Above all, be sure to check the small print on the packaging. Your tablets may have additional instructions for proper storage.
How Do I Know if My Water Purification Tablets Have Begun to Deteriorate?
There are a couple of easy ways to check your tablets for signs of deterioration:
- Tablets that have begun to deteriorate will fall apart easily when they’re pressed lightly between your fingers. If this happens, don’t rely on the tablets to purify your water.
- If you have iodine tablets, discolouration is a good indicator of deterioration. Fresh iodine water purification tablets will be a brownish-gray colour.
If your iodine tablets look more yellow or green, they need to be replaced. Don’t take a chance by using them.
Because iodine tablets are sold in small glass bottles, it’s also important to look at the condition of the bottle itself when checking the state of your tablets.
The cap should be tight on the bottle and show no signs of rust. If the bottle itself looks as though it has been exposed to water, or if the label looks faded from sun exposure, replace the tablets.
Do Iodine Tablets Expire?
Yes, they absolutely do.
How to Determine an Expiry Date for Iodine Tablets, If There is None on the Packageing
As previously noted, the manufacturers of iodine water purification tablets are not required to print an expiry date on the package.
This is due to the fact that they are categorized differently by the EPA than other chemicals used to purify water.
However, they don’t last forever. It’s recommended that an unopened bottle of iodine tablets be kept no longer than 4 years past the date of manufacture. That is if there is no expiry date on the package.
The date of manufacture can be determined by looking for the lot number. Lot numbers are found on everything from toothpaste to aspirin – to iodine water purification tablets.
The lot number is made up of the month and the year the product was made, and the number of the batch the product came from.
For example, a lot number might be – 1221219. In this case, the lot number can be read as:
- Month = 12
- Year = 21
- Batch number = 219
It might seem confusing, but keep in mind that the numbers will be in the order of month, year, and batch. First, figure out the year, and then the rest will be easy.
Do Chlorine-based Water Purification Tablets Expire?
Chlorine-based water purification tablets come with 3 different forms of chlorine as active ingredients. They all have a similar shelf-life: 4-5 years in an unopened wrapped package, 3 years in a tub, and 1 year once the container has been opened
Here’s more about the different types of chlorine:
- Chlorine on its own (Cl⁻) – Chlorine kills bacteria and viruses by breaking up the chemical bonds in their molecules. The molecules fall apart, and the pathogen dies (pathogens are “germs”).
Chlorine tablets won’t expire for 5 years if they are in an individually sealed strip package or 3 years in a tub container.
It’s best to buy these packaged as individually sealed tablets, aka. strip packages. They’re usually sold as boxes of 60 tablets, which will disinfect 60 L of water.
However, always go by the expiry date printed on the package. This will take into account how long it has been since the tablets were manufactured.
There aren’t many water purification tablets available anymore with chlorine as the only active ingredient. If you do find some that are sold in a bottle or tub, discard the unused tablets one year after the container is opened.
Chlorine water purification tablets shouldn’t be used with stainless steel or other metal water bottles. Chlorine is corrosive to metal and may damage the bottle over time.
- Chlorine dioxide (ClO₂) – chlorine dioxide is chemically completely different from chlorine, even though it does contain a chlorine molecule. Kind of similar to how a child is a completely different person than their parents.
- NaDCC, which is short for sodium dichloroisocyanurate. Another name for NaDCC is Troclosene sodium.
Similar to the other chlorine products, the shelf life for unopened packages is 5 years, or one year after opening.
NaDCC is similar to the other 2 chlorine-based purifiers. However, a bit more NaDCC will need to be used than ClO₂, and it is a bit more corrosive.
Keep in mind, however, that water purified with water purification tablets has quite a low concentration of chemicals. Therefore, corrosion isn’t a serious concern.
But if you are using the tablets several times a week, for example, it’s a good idea to use a plastic instead of a metal bottle. Or at least rinse your metal bottle out when you get home.

Iodine Water Purification Tablets and How Long They Last
Iodine will very likely not have an expiry date printed on the bottle of the packaging. If this is the case, write the date of purchase on the bottle, and discard the unopened bottle 4 years after that day.
- Even better, If you can find a lot number on the bottle, often labelled as Lot#1234567, follow the procedure described above. This will help you to determine the month and year of manufacture.
- Once you know this, you’ll have a better idea of how long your water purification tablets will last. We have no other way of knowing how long the tablets have sat in the store since they were made
- Knowing the date the water purification tablets were made gives us a much better idea of when they will expire. Discard the unopened bottle 4 years from the date it was made.
- And of course, once the bottle is opened, its shelf-life is drastically reduced. The tablets can only be relied on the properly purify your water for one year after the container has been opened.
- One important thing to remember about iodine water purification tablets is that iodine is very light-sensitive.
It will likely come in a dark glass bottle, as opposed to a strip pack. Keep it in its original container, or another air-tight, dark container.
- Remember to be sure the lid is tight and intact, with no rust.
If the tablets look “off”, discard them. Follow the guidelines discussed above.

Silver Water Purification Tablets and How Long They Last
The product Katadyn Micropur Forte MF 1T includes NaDCC as an active ingredient to purify. These can be kept for 5 years before they expire.
Silver tablets have one of the longest shelf lives, at 10 years for an unopened container. Once the container has been opened, discard tablets after one year.
However, this is for a product like Katadyn Micropur Classic MC Tablets. According to the manufacturer, these are for use in water storage, not purification.
Silver on its own should be used along with a filter.
Silver in water purification tablets is based on the fact that silver ions are bacteriostatic and bacteriocidal. This means that silver stops bacteria from reproducing, and it also actually kills them.
You’ve probably seen water filters, as well as “antibacterial socks”, for example, with silver woven into the fabric. This is why it works.
However, silver on its own in water is best for maintaining the purity of stored water. For purification, it is best to have a chlorine-based active ingredient, such as NaDCC.

Is It Dangerous to Use Water Purification Tablets Passed Their Expiry Date?
When it comes to water purification tablets, chances are they may work fine for a while once their expiration date has passed.
However, the only way to know if they are no longer effective is to try them. If you get sick, then you know.
I think you’ll agree that a better choice is to replace your tablets.
But the tablets themselves don’t become dangerous once they’ve expired. If you were to use them, the risk you would be taking is drinking water that hasn’t been properly purified.
Are Water Purification Tablets Safe to Use?
If water purification tablets are used according to the manufacturer’s instructions, chlorine-based water purification tablets are safe for use by healthy adults.
If you have any sort of acute or chronic health issues, or if you will be giving purified water to young children, it’s best to consult your physician before using water purification tablets.
Iodine water purification tablets can cause negative health effects if used for prolonged periods. It’s recommended that iodine water purification tablets be used for no longer than 3 weeks per year.
If you’re pregnant or have preexisting thyroid issues, don’t use iodine water purification tablets until you have consulted your doctor.
This is also true if you have a known sensitivity or allergy to iodine. As well, many people who are allergic to seafood are also sensitive to iodine, so please use caution.
The Downside to Water Purification Tablets
Unfortunately, water purification tablets can affect the taste of your water. This is more noticeable to some people than to others.
The obvious solution is to add a bit of flavour to the water to cover that taste up. You might keep a bit of lemonade powder in your bag, or flavoured Vitamin C tablets.
Some iodine tablets come with a neutralizer to improve the taste.
It is very important, though, to do this after you’ve waited the appropriate amount of time for your water to be purified.
Adding flavouring before purification can decrease the effectiveness of the water purification tablets.
Another trick that can decrease the taste of the water purification tablets is to pour the water back and forth between 2 containers. This can help the chemical and its taste to dissipate after purification.

Additional Considerations When Using Water Purification Tablets
There’s a little more to using water purification tablets than plopping one into your water bottle. Here are a few things to think about:
Alternatives to Water Purification Tablets
There are a few alternatives to using water purification tablets to get safe drinking water.
- Boiling is the gold standard for purifying water. But it isn’t always possible.
- Portable filters like the 24 oz Grayl water purifier bottle. According to the manufacturer, one of these can filter up to 250 L of water, and it can be used with cloudy or turbid water.
It will remove bacteria, viruses and parasites. It even filters out chemicals and microplastics.
- Steripen is owned by Katadyn, the company that makes some of the tablets discussed above. It’s a UV purifier, effective against bacteria, viruses, cryptosporidium, and giardia.
- Polar Pure Water Disinfectant Crystals break the expiry rule. The ultra-stable pure iodine crystals retain their effectiveness even after the bottle has been opened, and remain stable indefinitely.
This means that you can keep them in your bag for as long as they last, without having to wonder if they will still work. They kill bacteria and viruses, but not parasites.
There are a few liquid water purification options. However, tablets will last longer, and there is no risk of containers leaking into your bag.
