Best Time for an African Safari
The best time to travel to Africa for a safari depends somewhat on where you’re going. In general, though, the months of June through October are your best bet.
This is the dry season, which tends to be when the best wildlife sightings happen. The foliage is sparse and the grass is short, giving the animals less to hide behind.
There are fewer watering holes, too, during the dry season. This makes the animals’ movements more predictable.
All the wildlife in an area has to drink. With fewer spots for it, you can be sure to have some great sightings at the existing watering holes.
But really, you’ll have an amazing time on safari at any time of year.
Keep in mind that the summer might be too hot for your liking. Summer falls roughly from November to March in the southern hemisphere.
This tends to be the rainy season, though it won’t rain torrents every day. But trees will be fuller and more leafy and grass will be taller, giving animals more cover.
Plus there will be more spots for wildlife to go for water, so their movements become less predictable.
But honestly, any time of year is great for safari. I like to travel during shoulder or off-seasons. Fewer people and fewer safari vehicles are competing for sightings.
