I was, and I did a lot of research to find out before spending a month exploring this starkly beautiful country. My conclusion was, there’s never a bad time to visit Namibia, but there are better ones.

It depends somewhat on what you’d like to do when you’re visiting Namibia. Are you heading to Etosha to see the wildlife?

Planning some adventure activities in Swakopmund? Or maybe you just want to find the most affordable time to go.

We’re going to explore the best times to visit Namibia for different activities, taking into account not only the weather but also factors like cost and tourist crowds.

Namibia is a stunning place, and is one of my favourite places for an African road trip. That’s how I got to know Namibia on my first trip there, through the Namib Desert and beyond.

However you’re travelling, though, every season offers something spectacular in Namibia. To plan your perfect trip, you’ll need to consider the weather, wildlife sightings, and budget.

Here’s some info to help you make the most of your Namibian adventure:

📅 Namibia in January to March: Summer

Weather: Summer months in Namibia tend to be very hot and humid. Temperatures typically range between 30-35°C and reach up to 40°C in desert regions. Sporadic rains fall in January and February, mostly in the form of heavy afternoon downpours.

Safari: Summer in the northern regions like Etosha National Park means dense vegetation and scattered rains. Wildlife spotting can be more challenging as animals are hidden by the foliage. But this is when flamingos gather!

Coastal Areas: Coastal towns like Swakopmund and Walvis Bay have the cooling influence of the Atlantic Ocean going for them. As a result, they have drier, less humid conditions. The coastal and southern regions see considerably less rain.

Sossusvlei Area: There is intense heat in the desert areas if you’ll be exploring the iconic red dunes of Sossusvlei. Go in the early hours. It’s the perfect time for photographers to capture the dramatic contrasts and shadows cast by the rising or setting sun.

Caprivi Strip and Northern Areas: The wet season can occasionally make a mess of the roads in the more remote northern and Caprivi areas.

Cost & Crowds: This period sees fewer tourists compared to the drier months, especially December. Except for the times local families are travelling for summer holidays, it can be a great time if you’re looking to avoid crowds and enjoy lower prices.

Accommodations and activities might be more affordable, except in the drier coastal regions.

Weather: April is the end of the rainy season, and cooler temp and reduced humidity creep in. The average daytime temperature is around 25°C, to about 13°C at night, which can feel much cooler in desert areas. By June nights can be much colder, especially in those desert regions.

Safari: May and June are phenomenal months for wildlife viewing. As the landscapes dry out following the rainy season, animals begin to congregate around the scarce water sources.

Etosha National Park and Ongava Game Reserve are spectacular during these months. The reduced vegetation and limited water availability mean better chances of spotting lions, elephants, black rhinos, and other wildlife around waterholes.

Coastal areas: Visitors are few in areas like Swakopmund and Walvis Bay, with cooler, foggy mornings and evenings.

Sossusvlei Area: This is a fantastic time to explore the dunes and desert landscapes in the Sossusvlei area. You might even catch the tail end of the desert wildflower bloom.

Caprivi Strip and Northern Areas: This is the end of the rainy season, transitioning into cooler and drier weather. April still sees some rain and lots of green, but by May and June, rains let up quite a bit and conditions improve.

Temps also come down, with warm days and cooler nights.

Cost & Crowds: April and May fall outside of the peak tourist season, so more pricing is more competitive for accommodations and tours. The lower number of tourists during these months provides an amazing, quiet experience.

Weather: Daytime temperatures averaging 29°C, gradually increasing into November and December with temperatures reaching up to 30°C. The first rains come, with occasional dramatic thunderstorms, especially in December. They tend to clear by early evening.

And who doesn’t love a dramatic thunderstorm?

Safari: Spring is excellent for Namibia safaris! Lots of babies are born starting in December. There are still few water sources in areas like Etosha National Park and Ongava Game Reserve, so chances of seeing them are good.

The sparse vegetation continues to make spotting animals easier. Dust can be a bit of a problem during game drives in early spring, though.

Coastal areas: Spring weather is usually nice and mild. Temps start to go up but stay a bit cooler than the inland parts due to the Atlantic breeze.

Coastal regions like Swakopmund and Walvis Bay typically are still pretty dry.

I saw mostly clear blue skies in the mornings. Sometimes there is fog and cooler temps, especially during the evenings and nights.

Sossusvlei Area: Temperatures are increasing here, too. Early mornings are the best time for exploring the area.

Caprivi Strip and Northern areas: The temp start to warm up, and the humidity increases. October may still see some dry days, but by November, occasional rains start, increasing in frequency and intensity into December.

Cost & Crowds: Spring is generally a shoulder season. The number of visitors starts to pick up in anticipation of the high season of December, and prices go up, too.

Like I said, there’s no bad time to see Namibia! Choosing the best time to visit really depends on what you’re hoping to do and see.

If you’re after the best wildlife spotting, aim for the dry months. If you’re after comfortable travel conditions and fewer crowds, the shoulder seasons are for you.
