Having lived just 3 minutes off the famous trail for the past several years, I’ve stayed in several rental spots. I’ve found that you can find everything from very basic cabins in the spectacular natural surroundings to luxurious vacation rentals that make you want to stay forever.

What I learned from exploring the enormous variety of hotels and vacation rentals is that each has something to offer for a special stay. And that with so many to choose from, the task can be overwhelming.
To make the job a little easier for you, I’ve chosen 7 accommodations that received the highest ratings. The ratings come from everywhere I could find them, including Airbnb, Expedia, Google, Travelocity, and other sites. I read them all and found the best.
I’ve gathered all the important bits of info so that you can make the best choice for you. I included a local’s perspective of the area each found in. Be sure to report back here with how your stay went!

#1 – Sunnyside Cabin at Wreck Cove Cabins and Archery Range

What’s special about Sunnyside Cabin
In the stunning Wreck Cove area, the pretty, modern cabin is full of green plants and sunshine. The covered deck is the perfect place to relax and listen to the sounds of nature.
But with so much to do in the area, you might not be spending a lot of time in the cabin. Sunnyside is minutes from the popular Cape Smokey Trail, Donaldson Beach, and Ingonish Beach Lookout.
Plus the Dancing Moose Cafe is just a 2-minute drive from your door – one of my favourite spots to eat.
At Sunnyside Cabin you get:
A full kitchen – dishes and utensils, baking and cookware, coffee maker (pour-over and french press), foil and parchment paper, black and herbal tea, as well as salt, pepper, and sugar. You also have your own BBQ, and propane is provided.
Bedrooms – 2 comfy bedrooms with queen beds as well as a double-size futon.
Full bathroom – with bathtub.
Temp control – electric heating along with a cozy wood stove; firewood is provided from December through May. (Locals along the trail sell bundles of firewood in the summer.)
Indoor fun – Starlight WiFi, a TV with a Firestick streaming device bringing in ad-free Prime and other services; books, art supplies, and games.
Outdoor fun – access to a communal firepit, shared by the other cabins at Wreck Cove Cabins, with firewood. And, if you’re here from June until mid-November, make an appointment to hit the archery range!
Pets – you’re provided with a basket full of towels and rags, plus sheets for the furniture.
Location – you’re just a 7-minute walk (1 minute drive) to the Wreck Cove General Store (lobster sandwiches, ice cream, souvenirs in summer!); a 20-minute drive to Cape Smokey, and a 6-minute drive to Duncan’s Beach.

What’s special about Chalet Gedouque
You have the luxury of privacy, surrounded by nature, and the convenience of being close to the pretty town of Cheticamp, on the “Musical Coast”. You’ll have year-round access to restaurants and shops, with a good-sized grocery store.
Nearby are several excellent hiking trails as well as St Peter’s Beach, a favourite with locals and visitors. Plus, the views of the harbour and Cheticamp Island from the covered deck are amazing!
At Chalet Gedouque you get:
A full kitchen – microwave, dishwasher, dishes and utensils, cookware, a coffee/tea maker, spices, a toaster, blender, rice cooker. There’s also a bbq and outdoor seating area.
Bedrooms – the main level bedroom is furnished with a queen size bed; upstairs in the loft are 2 more queen beds.
Full bathroom – with bathtub. Plus hairdryer, shampoo, conditioner, and body soap.
Extra amenities – your own washer and dryer, iron, travel crib, and safe.
Temp control – the chalet is heated and air-conditioned.

Outdoor fun – a fire pit and hammock, water access in the harbour across the road. Cheticamp is just outside the Cabot Trail Highlands National Park, which is home to a lot of incredible hiking trails and park activities.
Location – you’re just minutes from restaurants, bars, and shops. There’s even a convenience store/gas station that’s open late.

The gorgeous spot has mountain views and is just a few minutes walk to the bay – beach, sunset – bliss.
At the HideOut you get:

Location – the unit is amazing for nature lovers. You’re a 10-minute walk to whale watching tours and the Whale Interpretive Centre. The famous Skyline Trail is a 15-minute drive away, and there are several other beautiful hikes nearby.
The restaurant The Rusty Anchor, a favourite with locals and visitors, is a short drive away. As well, the town of Chaticamp is about 54 minutes south. It has a gas station, several eateries, and a few shops.

What’s special about Spruce Cottage
The epitome of spectacular views that you can enjoy while soaking in the private wood-fired hot tub on the deck. The cottage is modern and elegant, and is just a quick walk to a sandy beach.
And if you’d like to try your hand at fly-fishing, you’re just minutes from the perfect spot. Not to mention nearby hiking trails and golf course. There’s also an EV charging station on site.
At Spruce Cottage you get:
A full kitchen – toaster, coffee maker, dishes, utensils, cookware, dishwasher, spices. You’ll have a bbq to use as well.
Bedrooms – 1 bedroom with queen bed.
Full bathroom – with hairdryer, shampoo, conditioner, shower gel.
Temp control – a cozy wood stove and fireplace; heating and air conditioning.
Indoor fun – WiFi, Smart TV, books.
Outdoor fun – fire pit in the front yard, garden; near hiking trails and whale watching. There’s an aluminum staircase down to a lovely sandy beach. Note that these are removed from November to April.
Pets – you’re welcome to bring one dog with you.
Location – the cottage is on the beach in the rural setting of Margaree Harbour. Nearby, you’ll find local attractions like the Margaree Harbour Range Rear Lighthouse and the Margaree Fish Hatchery.
The area is perfect if you’re looking for game walks and birdwatching, or just connecting with nature.

What’s special about Hilltop Haven
This spacious and private home overlooks the beautiful Bras d’Or Lake. It’s in Baddeck, a picturesque little village with a pretty waterfront, great places to eat, and a thriving ceilidh* scene.
Hilltop is great for large groups or small – larger groups have access to an additional lower floor. The big deck lets you enjoy the sunrise every morning, and the outdoor playground is perfect for the kids. There’s even a screened-in sunroom.
*A ceilidh (pronounced kaylee) is a social event with music, singing, traditional dancing, and stories. Try to catch at least one while you’re in the neighbourhood.
At Hilltop Haven you get:
A full kitchen – coffee/tea maker, electric kettle microwave, dishwasher, blender, paper towels; bbq for your use.
Bedrooms – 2 bedrooms with queen beds on the main level; one queen bedroom and a pullout queen bed sofa bed on the walk-out lower level.
2.5 bathrooms – with shampoo and soap.
Temp control – heating and air conditioning, plus a wood stove in the living room.
Indoor fun – WiFi, smart TV, games, books.
Outdoor fun – fire pit, and garden, nearby public access to the water and boat launch area. Great for canoeing, kayaking and fishing. And in the winter, you have access to snowmobile trails.
Pets – only service animals are welcome.
Location – Hilltop Haven is near 2 popular hiking trails, as well as the Kidston Island Beach Ferry. The Wagmatcook Culture and Heritage Centre and the Bras d’Or Lakes and Watershed Interpretive Centre are just a few minutes’ drive away.
The home is just west of Baddeck, where you’ll find the Alexander Graham Bell House. The town is also full of little shops, boutiques, and eateries, and a beautiful waterfront.

What’s special about the Roadside Roost
The new accommodations at the Groovy Goat are my own favourites around the Trail. It’s in a terrific spot in Ingonish, over a soap and gelato shop (all made on the premises).
Out back is the barn, home to goats, donkeys, cows, and chickens. And sometimes the owners’ cat. You’re welcome to visit the barn and pet the animals anytime!
And the rooms are furnished with Groovy Goat soap products, and come with gelato sampling and morning coffee.
At Roadside Roost you get:
Your own kitchenette – dishes and utensils, a coffee maker and coffee, minifridge, microwave, and shared charcoal grill.
Bedrooms – there are 3 rooms to choose from. Each has a queen bed in the main bedroom; one also has a private kid’s nook with a half-size bed.
Bathroom – with hairdryer, shampoo, conditioner, and Groovy Goat body soap. (No bathtub.)
Temp control – heating and air conditioning.
Indoor fun – WiFi, TV, books, board games.
Outdoor fun – the barn is always available to you, the shared grill is yours to use, and Point Beach is just a few minutes walk away.
Pets – sorry, your furry friends can’t stay.
Location – Roadside Roost is in the heart of Ingonish, next door to the Salty Rose and the Periwinkle Cafe. It’s home to delicious local dishes and beautiful art, crafts, and jewelry items.
It’s also close to the Seagull Restaurant, a local favourite, as well as other fantastic places to eat. You’re close to a selection of beaches, Warren Lake, and several hiking trails.
